Guadalajara University Hospital is a public hospital that belongs to the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. The Health Service of Castilla – La Mancha (SESCAM) is responsible for the citizens’ health management in this region.
Project purpose and Implementation
Improve management, research output and clinical practice quality with better use of data. Implementing Savana Manager® to accelerate health science and practice.
Improving clinical management and quality treatment
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is a lung disease characterized by chronic obstruction of lung airflow that interferes with normal breathing and is not fully reversible.
Last month, we talked to Dr. José Luis Izquierdo, COPD specialist and Head of Pneumology Department at Guadalajara University Hospital. On 16th June, he was at the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) National Congress in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. He shared his impressions about this important event with us:
„Attendees at the Congress have been impressed by what this technology delivers. There was a meeting for the COPD responsible body of each autonomous community, it´s called autonomic COPD forum. My participation has been to identify and describe deficiencies in COPD diagnosis and treatment in Castilla la Mancha. I analysed the situation using Savana and the messages have been very strong.”
Real Health Results
Savana Médica does precision medicine and real-world evidence science, helping facilitate strategic changes in the decision-making process. Using Real world data (RWD) with the most innovative technology in the market enabling professionals to apply Quality Care Management.
„This technology makes it possible to identify the problem and, almost in real time, assess the impact of the measures implemented to improve the situation.“
„One of the conclusions at this Congress meeting was that although there are currently numerous clinical practice guidelines, strategies and integrated care projects to set guidance for COPD clinical management, there is hardly any updated information on its impact on the quality of diagnosis and treatment. Savana allows us to identify general population problems, without selection bias, and is a very powerful tool to monitor effectiveness in quality care management.“
Bias is defined as any process at any stage of inference which tends to produce results or conclusions that differ systematically from the truth. Savana´s technology allows clinicians to evolve, from analysing just a sample to knowing real life information of the whole population.
„Savana Médica enhances „deep medicine“, because it does not allow you to generate bias, but rather analysing ordinary medical practice. Many times, in my experience, audits are made covering a very short time, they are very expensive, and you always have the feeling you´re not collecting everything that is happening (doctor can be on constant alert when they know it´s happening and that can lead to a change of behaviours, etc.) There is always an intervention that distorts the ordinary truth, and then you just capture partially what happens in reality, missing malpractice that is there.“
„In Field Studies the population is selected, biased, that you cannot translate results in favour of your real-life patients because they are different. In clinical management of patients at information management level, the same thing happens. Sometimes we use variables that may be omitted or biased. Being able to upload everything gives you information about good practice, bad practice, or what is not being done; it allows us to learn about real life. The correct picture is Savana´s. Savana is significantly less time consuming, avoids bias, and provides real life information.“
SAVANA was founded in 2014, now it is the time we can present real results, because several healthcare professionals are continuously communicating its real usefulness in everyday practise and management, when they attend congresses or events. It will not take long until we see health changes in populations where SAVANA was implemented.
„I am very enthusiastic about the Savana technology, it continues to evolve with the introduction of new useful features and we have identified multiple use cases from the moment we introduced it to the hospital. I firmly believe that if this impressive rate of improvement is maintained then we will witness how this tool will help to facilitate tangible health changes/ improvements in the population. I think this will be very important.“
